Recently, I made a mix-tape for my car of Brendan's songs. Isn't that old school?

I love My Old Familiar Friend. It's so different from One Mississippi and Lapalco, more mature if that makes sense? It's not my favourite of Brendan's albums, but it a stunning record.
Garbage Day reminds me of the music I listened to as a kid, on a Saturday morning when my mum and dad were still together. It's so weird that it can take me right back to those days!
I still love Don't Wanna Talk even though I've heard it a gazillion times, hehe.

well I definitely should take some time for translation in the next days, as I also reviewed My Old, Familiar Friend for the Revolving Doors webzine. The site owner was so happy about that review that she put it in the homepage for almost a month - hope that helped making BB a bit more known in Italy! www.revolvingdoors.it/site/modules/myReviews/detailfile.php?lid=98here it is, for the brave! I think this album is a masterpiece. Dunno if I like it more than Lapalco, but surely I found something very special and hard to describe. I might have found some words to say that in the review, hope to be able to post it in english next week, anyways listening to it was like entering a picture, being into a very intimate and homely situation.... it was like being inside one of those sentimental yet harsh movies, where characters are so realistic it hurts and colours are stunning, and music totally fits.

Ok I am brave but no so much lol Spanish and Italian, especially spoken are quite similar I agree with you in most of the aspect you mention: the introspection, the maturity of the work and all that. But i don't share the point of Borrow, I don't know why I don't get the point of this song... I mean the song is ok but when you listen to the whole CD but not to listen to it separately and I cannot find the Beatles point you mention Anyway I love your reviews!

Thanks for being brave Elena! *_*
You're not the first one that does not agree with the Beatles point. I fear I interpreted it in a too "musicological" way: I am a Beatles junkie, so much that I read also very very technical essays about their songwriting, typical tones, scales, stuff like that, and I think Borrow reminds, in the use of tones, the mood of John Lennon in the Rubber Soul time (Run For Your Life, to mention a song) on the one side, and Paul Mc Cartney's taste for chords on the other. This is still a very, very technical opinion, and I totally understand it's quite hard to share. Anyways I agree on the fact that it is slightly hard to get the point of the song, it sounds quite "else" compared to the rest of the record, but this is one of the things that made me love it and I appreciate about Brendan.

The new record is definately Brendan's most confidant, especially in his singing. I do miss some of the insecurity from One Mississippi and Lapalco. However, it is a great batch of songs.

My old Familiar Friend is the first album that I have of B.B. I was lucky to see him at a small bar here in Santa Barbara and i would of got the C.D. at the show but I had to get a shirt instead. I do love this album, I hear a lot of E.L.O, put a smile on my face reminds me of being a kid

i really love the song "Misery". i think its the overlooked masterpiece from the album not by me ... it was my favourite track the first time I listened and it still is! ... I love the do do dodo bits. To me it sounds like 'classic' Brendan Benson, I wish he'd make an album that sounded like this all the way through. ;D "The days are long and the nights go slow, the clouds roll in and the cold winds blow" ... makes me go all shivers that bit!!
