I was just curious as to what everyone's favorite benson song is? And also why it is their favorite song? I know this is a difficult task to ask... I can't even do it but I can narrow it down to my favorite 3. So I will start it off... My favorite 3 songs are Metarie, Emma J, and Between Us. These were all songs that meant a great deal to me while I was goin through a breakup... Now what are your favorite songs and why?

This is such a tough one, and I'm probably going to fail at limiting myself to three even, but here we go:
What I'm Looking For - it's just perfect to me. I was trying to quote a line but I can't even pick one. It sums up every dilemma I've ever had I think! I always like to explain Brendan's music to people by saying he turns something cliche into something really beautiful, and often there's some odd little chords in there too, it makes it bittersweet. This song is the prime example of that, but mostly, it just helps me to feel whatever I need to feel in whatever situation.
Me Just Purely - "My looks and my skin and my temper, in this town, this place I call my home. Well it's me just purely." I can't even explain what this song does to me, it feels like home. The first time I heard Brendan sing it was when we overheard his soundcheck in Bristol, and it broke my heart, all imperfect and the way his voice strains around some of the lyrics (as it does on the Welfed version of it too) and I was pretty much an incoherent heap of mush for a moment. Then we next heard it played during the set a couple of days later and it made me feel all comforted and warm. And my brain doesn't compute how one song can do that! Yeah maybe actually this is my favourite of all favourites. Hmm.
Gold into Straw - not one that many people pick out but I just out and out love it, and how it (along with the Pledge which is also made of love) sounds a little different to the rest of the record, but how it fits perfectly.
Honourable mentions go to Jet Lag, Them and Me, Garbage Day, Son of a Welder (it's the intro) and more recently a worrying obsession with Borrow (haha...LET'S PLAY BORROW.) I still feel like I'm missing a ton looking at this list though. I'm staring at the back of Lapalco right now going "wait...I love THAT one more" and basically it's all of them, ever.

I'm a freak for One Mississippi, my favourite Benson song is either Me Just Purely or Maginary Girl.

Metarie is my favorite song, not only among the BB production, but of all times! I feel it just talks about me, either in good and bad times I can catch some lines from its lyrics and they just would fit perfectly to my life, whatever is happening. I first heard it on a sampler cd I found on a magazine in 2002, never heard about BB before that moment, but it entered my heart and never went out. Discovering his musical career then was such a great adventure!
it's hard to choose two more songs, as he's one of the artists with the better melodical taste and lyrical depth I know, and the quality of his works is always high.
Poised and Ready - I think it's the gem of the new album - I found the whole record very reflective and intimate, but this song spreads out like an energy ball. I love the riff, love the melody, ADORE the lyrics.
Insects Rule - I could mention any other song actually, but I chose this one for the very creative and surreal lyrics, reminds me of Kafka and italian writer Stefano Benni at the same time (which is quite a contrast, but really enjoyable).

I've been thinking about this for ages and I seriously can't narrow it down! There are so many songs that mean different things so I'll start with the ones that pop into my head. Eyes on the Horizon reminds me of the fun tour times with my best friends Tea reminds me of drunken singing, and Brendan saying they don't know it in England and that they should(?!!) The strings on Garbage Day are just so beautiful they don't even need words. Same for The Pledge, without the strings Feel Like Taking You Home is the only one that springs to mind that makes me feel kind of sad. When Brendan played it last in Leeds, I dunno, the lyrics really hit home with me and the song became so much more urgent, almost like a panic attack brewing. It was like I suddenly understood what actual anxiety was. I think Brendan's been the background music to me growing up, (not being a kid,) but discovering who I really am and what I want, so emotional growing up I suppose. -- That was incredibly deep, haha!

I agree with what Jess said about 'What I'm Looking For.'
But my favorite is "Tiny Spark." It's me in song form. "Crosseyed" holds a special place in my heart as well!

Either "tiny spark" or "what I'm looking for". i can relate to them both. He is a great lyricist.

Good To Me- best song to listen to in the car/when upset. It is such a pick-me-up for when i am sad/angry. Although it often makes me forget the speed limit and just hit the accelerator, which is why I have taken it off my car songs CD! Gonowhere- first heard the demo of this around the time when it was on BB's myspace and loved it then. Heard the final version in the car (again) and almost drove off the road, i was that amazed by how wonderful it was. Again, great pick-me-up song, just so soothing Emma J- just a lovely accoustic song that makes me feel so happy and in love when i hear it. I can also sing (in my opinion) a pretty good harmony to it, which I am prone to do when alone! Honestly though, I can't think of a BB song that i dislike though. Special mentions to What I'm Looking For, Tiny Spark and Garbage Day too.

My three (all from his first album)
Bird's Eye View. Love love love his voice in that song. Very rockin tune.
Maginary Girl. The bridge in that song is definitely the best part.
House in Virginia. Very calming, I love the harmonies and melody in that song.
Dig?
