Elliott Smith is another one of those Indie artists that fly under the radar... His melodies and lyrics are enough to make the devil cry. Many of his lyrics have hidden content that is just full of raw emotion. Elliott Smith is next to Benson in my book in some of the best modern artists. Smith's music as well as Benson have gotten me through some tough times... When I'm studyin or just in the mood I pop on any of Elliott's albums on vinyl and just relax. Anybody else out there like Elliott Smith?

I adore Elliott Smith, and am normally the one to start the Elliott threads on message boards, but after my first post on this board being starting the thread on Cory Chisel, I figured I should focus on Brendan for a while, lol.
I have everything that he ever released and just recently aquired (thanks to a dear friends birthday gift) the Autumn De Wilde book on Elliott. But like you said, you have to be "in the mood", to listen to his music. I did initially compare Brendan and Elliott, as I discovered Elliott not long after i'd discovered Brendan, I always kinda thought that Brendan was like the happy Elliott. (Is it my imagination or have I been saying their names a lot? Lol). But I kind of disagree with myself a bit now, I know its because of personal circumstances around their music, but to me they've kinda become worlds apart. Again, like you, Elliott's music got me through some really tough times, and now I find it difficult to listen to his music without going back there. Whereas Brendan always makes me happy regardless of things it makes me think about, but I know thats because of the friends i've found through Brendan's music, and getting to know Brendan and his band and roadies etc, it's all just good memories now.
I do however, think that Mark Watrous (probably mostly known round these parts as being Brendan's awesome right hand man) sounds a lot like Elliott Smith at times in his own music. Although, again Mark's music is easy to listen to, and i don't have to be in a certain mood to listen, and it is generally much happier music.
Although, "a little less than a happy high, a little less than a suicide" is one of my favourite lyrics ever.
But erm...yeah....I like Elliott Smith. Hehe. ;D

Wow... I thought I was the only one in here that liked Smith that much... but apparently u proved me wrong. haha I can agree with u there, he kinda does seem like the more happy Elliott haha but I think thats because of the lyrical content. Brendan writes a lot about love and Elliott has deep meaningful lyrics (a lot about drugs) One of my favorite Elliott songs mixes those two concepts.. Twilight... It mixes his drug habits with his love, he loves this woman but he loves his drugs more one of my favorite quotes of a song ever "you don't deserve to be lonely, but those drugs u got wont make u feel better, pretty soon ull find its the only little part of ur life ur keeping together" But yes.. marks music is easy to listen to I think hes kinda a mix between elliott and Bensons music and like u I discovered them kinda around the same time, elliott maybe a year b4, love them both though
